My initial idea was a pastiche of Magritte, until editor Jonathan Ames pointed out that Magritte was Belgian. Still, once an idea gets its teeth into your ankle it’s sometimes hard to shake it off. We settled for basting the image with a liberal dose of cliché to Frenchify it, et ton oncle, c’est Bob.
Here’s a cover for the Morning Post magazine in Hong Kong. The subject was the rise in demand for English-trained butlers in Asia and Russia, and the resulting growth in butler training schools in the UK. The article described how the proprietor of one such academy liked to fling tennis balls at trainees as they carried trays of glasses, which sounded like a drill-sergeant’s trick…
